I have built a tool which can collect maps from players, remove all colours, warplanets and info, and make a list of the size, coordinates and names of all planets entered.
With this, it is possible to make a fairly accurate version of the galaxy in svg, or a minimap in png
I ran this project on kosmor.de, and got quite a reasonable map... so, i think it's about time for .com's turn
Watch this space... probably some time today, I'll make it ready for use
EDIT: for those who would like to see the result i got from the .de version after a while (for comparison with the .com galaxy)
note: both of these pics are from kosmor.de _________________ Major alphabravo in the house Thalgados-Sissyhood

http://www.rebelstudentalliance.co.uk/kosmor/map_neutral_com.html
Enter the source of an SVG file in the big box, then the name of a planet on the map in the top box, and the coordinates of that planet in the next 2 boxes.
Then press Run Map Tool
if you see a page with the names of lots of your planets on... it's probably worked.
Note: The planet name must be given in the form it appears, ie make sure there are no spaces/tabs, and it must begin with a capital letter.
The total number of planets currently known is displayed here:

Currently 1155

Can you create a page with all the planet names, as we upload them? |

i could... and i currently have it written, but i might leave it a few more days before i publish it
currently, there is quite a complete block in the south west, west and south, and south east... even northeast
but central, northern, eastern and northeastern maps are missing
i'll make a search tool, so people can search to see if a planet is there already
http://www.rebelstudentalliance.co.uk/cgi-bin/universe-com/search.pl
this is one of the most useful ends of the database
the southern spiral arm appears to come off at 1950/1700 give or take a bit... _________________ Major alphabravo in the house Thalgados-Sissyhood |

if you ever use the button of the kosmor map page labelled "SVG" - then this is the same as this... it's just larger, and differently coloured... and a few ammendments
but the general design is the same
the source of an SVG is the text which makes it up, you can usually view this if you can view the svg... either save the svg to your computer, then open with notepad, or right click when viewing the svg, and press view source
SVG is a language which makes pictures, usually graphics, but they look more like html (svg is xml based, as is xhtml)
this means that it's really a set of instructions, telling a computer how to draw it, rather than actually a picture
if you open your kosmor map (png) and try and zoom in... it'll look ugly, and there is no more detail if you zoom in more
because svg is written in xml, it redraws it when you zoom in, so if you zoom in a thousand times on a diagonal line, there is no pixelisation
it is also useful (especially in kosmor), because it's much much easier for a computer to read svg than it is for it to read png or other raster image formats
if you want to know more... try looking at:

it's not your fault... but my db wiped itself when you tried yours... sometime soon i will give it a proper database backend... but for the moment i'm trying to add a load of extra planets from merthos's big map (see the universe thread in question and answers forum)
if you want to try again... please go ahead..
i'll be working on it for a while... so if it crashes again, i can fix it quickly from my backups _________________ Major alphabravo in the house Thalgados-Sissyhood |
